Practical notes from running a BigCommerce store since 2021. What we tried, what worked, what we paid for outside help on.
This is a small section where I write up the things we have done to our BigCommerce store that other merchants might find useful. It is not affiliated with BigCommerce. It is a working document of our own experience, posted here because the same questions keep coming up in merchant Slack groups and a written reference is faster to share than another long conversation.
The three articles below cover the customizations that produced the biggest measurable changes for us. Read them in any order.
Five specific changes took our store from 1.8% conversion to 3.4% over 14 months. Some we built ourselves. One we had to outsource because it was past our depth. The article walks through each customization, what it cost, and the conversion lift we measured. Start with the customization roundup with our before-and-after numbers.
Our default checkout was costing us money. The Checkout SDK lets you replace the front end of the checkout page with a custom UI while keeping the BigCommerce payment infrastructure underneath. Our deeper writeup on how the Checkout SDK works and how we used it covers the SDK initialization, the conditional flows we added, and the measurable result.
Wholesale customers do not buy at retail prices. We started with manual quote emails. Now we run four pricing tiers that auto-assign based on YTD purchase volume, all through BigCommerce B2B Edition's Customer Groups and Price Lists. The setup walkthrough is at our B2B pricing tier playbook.
